{"id":74,"date":"2016-05-12T21:44:11","date_gmt":"2016-05-13T02:44:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/?p=74"},"modified":"2016-05-13T07:47:11","modified_gmt":"2016-05-13T12:47:11","slug":"the-future-of-social-media-is-coming-sooner-than-you-think","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/the-future-of-social-media-is-coming-sooner-than-you-think\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future of Social Media is Coming Sooner Than You Think"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Relatively speaking, social media is still the wild west of media.\u00a0 Yet it\u2019s come along quite a bit in the last few years as companies like Facebook pave the way with monetizing mobile, offering brands measurable ROI for advertising on their platforms, curating relevant content vs. chronological posts, a deeper push into live content and video, and better integrating a personal network of friends with brands, news, and trending topics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Western-Social-Media-11.19.141.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-81\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-81 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Western-Social-Media-11.19.141-1024x590.jpg\" alt=\"Social Media Wild West\" width=\"648\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Western-Social-Media-11.19.141-1024x590.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Western-Social-Media-11.19.141-300x173.jpg 300w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Western-Social-Media-11.19.141-768x442.jpg 768w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Western-Social-Media-11.19.141.jpg 1419w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Television on the other hand is very well established, but is going through an identity crisis.\u00a0 For decades TV has been the best source for America\u2019s news, original content, sports, entertainment, and general way to pass time.\u00a0 It has also been the go-to platform for brands to advertise on because of its vast reach and established ad pricing models \u2013 however, TV advertising is a shot in the dark compared with the ability of social media to hyper-target individuals.\u00a0 And brands are starting to realize this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Money_cut_the_cord.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-76\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-76\" src=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Money_cut_the_cord.jpg\" alt=\"TV Cutting the Cord\" width=\"648\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Money_cut_the_cord.jpg 1000w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Money_cut_the_cord-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Money_cut_the_cord-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>TV is also fighting a war on two fronts with its viewership declining as millions of Americans \u201ccut the cord\u201d in favor of streaming services like Netflix and HBO Now \u2013 causing ad spots to lose value \u2013 and brands\u2019 TV budgets declining as they allocate more funds for Social and Internet Display ads.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t take a rocket scientist to see that the 800 lb. Gorilla of Television is finally losing its relevance, as Americans make way for the Social Media new kid on the block that is finally coming of age.<\/p>\n<p>Live video started making waves in the social media world in the spring of 2015 with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/3\/17\/8234769\/how-meerkat-conquered-all-at-sxsw\" target=\"_blank\">announcement of Meerkat<\/a> at Austin\u2019s annual film, music, interactive media and technology festival, South by Southwest (SXSW).\u00a0 The live-streaming video app startup took the tech community by storm as it showed just revolutionary it was to feel like you were actually in another place.\u00a0 It felt different than live TV, because it was less of a show, less professional, and you could have this screen in your hand.\u00a0 And the world pounced on this idea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/what-meerkat-live-video-app.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-82\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-82\" src=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/what-meerkat-live-video-app.jpg\" alt=\"Meerkat Live Video App Screenshot\" width=\"648\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/what-meerkat-live-video-app.jpg 736w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/what-meerkat-live-video-app-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately, Facebook started <a href=\"http:\/\/digiday.com\/publishers\/autoplay-video-beat-regular-video-sorry-guys\/\" target=\"_blank\">auto-playing video<\/a> in its newsfeed, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/twitter-acquires-periscope-for-a-sizable-amount-2015-3\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter bought the Meerkat competitor, Periscope<\/a> \u2013 yet neither Meerkat nor Periscope really took off the way everyone thought they would last year.\u00a0 It was still hard to solve the #1 problem of live video: an easy way to tune in when content is actually live.\u00a0 But as long as video can be saved and viewed later, Live has a future.\u00a0 And Facebook is the perfect platform to view this sort of video in a newsfeed.<\/p>\n<p>Then in October of 2015, Twitter, after its CEO stepped down in favor of bringing back its founder, Jack Dorsey, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/10\/6\/9457267\/twitter-moments-project-lightning\" target=\"_blank\">launched Moments<\/a>.\u00a0 Moments was Twitter\u2019s biggest update since Dorsey announced that the company needed to refocus its brand as the leader in Live \u2013 not just live video, but being the go-to source for live events and commentary. \u00a0Moments made it easy to browse trending topics by category and quickly catch up with everything you needed to know.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Twitter-Moments.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-84\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-84\" src=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Twitter-Moments.jpg\" alt=\"Twitter Moments\" width=\"750\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Twitter-Moments.jpg 750w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Twitter-Moments-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s Trending feature is a similar product, and very soon I can see the company making efforts to integrate this with its live video.\u00a0 In April 2016, Facebook announced it would begin paying content creators to produce live video exclusively for the platform, and it turns out money talks because they shook the media world once again with Buzzfeed live-streaming an attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/tasneemnashrulla\/we-blew-up-a-watermelon-and-everyone-lost-their-freaking-min?utm_term=.smrJJ6WenQ#.fo3nngjyXY\" target=\"_blank\">explode a watermelon with only rubber bands<\/a> (if you haven\u2019t seen this, you missed out on a cultural phenomenon and need to watch it ASAP).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/watermelon.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-80\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-80\" src=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/watermelon.gif\" alt=\"Exploding Watermelon\" width=\"714\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, they won\u2019t need to pay content producers forever \u2013 just imagine scrolling through your Facebook news feed through dozens of live videos, prominently featured near the top, the same way you would flip through TV channels to see if anything good was on.\u00a0 However, now live watermelon explosions will evolve into livestreaming the Cavs vs. Warriors, the latest episode of the Bachelor, and CNN Live, all mixed in with posts from your friends and the latest news articles.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that difficult to imagine, and all the groundwork is being laid down now for this to be a reality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/FB-Instant-Articles.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-85\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-85\" src=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/FB-Instant-Articles-1024x874.jpg\" alt=\"Facebook Instant Articles\" width=\"648\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/FB-Instant-Articles-1024x874.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/FB-Instant-Articles-300x256.jpg 300w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/FB-Instant-Articles-768x656.jpg 768w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/FB-Instant-Articles.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And to top it all off, companies like Google and Facebook are moving content from other places on the internet to live within their own walls.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/marketingland.com\/google-launches-amp-listings-heres-how-they-look-166136\" target=\"_blank\">Google\u2019s AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages)<\/a> has a curated list of the most relevant news pre-loaded onto Google\u2019s servers and placed at the top of your google searches, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/instantArticles\/\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook Instant Articles<\/a> is doing the same on its platform.\u00a0 Soon these companies will be the new \u201cTV channels\u201d with a collection of exclusive content, motivating users to visit them to get the best news and entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/social-media-king.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-78\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-78\" src=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/social-media-king.jpg\" alt=\"Social Media King\" width=\"500\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/social-media-king.jpg 500w, http:\/\/johnveltri.me\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/social-media-king-300x268.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So long story short, if you don\u2019t feel like you spend enough time on Facebook already, it\u2019s only going to grow.\u00a0 Advertisers will follow with their marketing money, not only on Facebook, but with other maturing platforms like Twitter, Snapchat, Youtube and Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>TV is on its way out.\u00a0 Social Media is becoming an adult.\u00a0 And you\u2019re going to be spending a lot more time online.\u00a0 But that\u2019s okay \u2013 enter Social Media 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>John Veltri is an
